It depends on the analysis of your water. For sediment and chlorine, a filtration system is sufficient; for salts (hard water) a softener is needed; for high-purity drinking water, reverse osmosis is required. They are often combined.
Indications are limescale on taps and tiles, reduced soap performance, damage to boilers and washing machines. Hardness is measured in French degrees (°f) — above 20°f a softener is recommended.
Sediment filters are changed every 3-6 months, activated carbon annually. The softener needs salt replenishment and resin check. RO membranes are replaced every 2-3 years depending on water quality.
